It surrounds the expansive lake of Ana Sagar, and is itself ringed by the rugged Aravalli Hills. Ajmer is Rajasthan’s most important site in terms of Islamic history and heritage. Ajmer District has an area of 8,481 km², and a population of 2,583,052 (2011 census).
